Burnout Is Not a Personal Failure

It’s the predictable outcome of systems that weren’t built for us.

I want to be very clear about this, because the narrative keeps getting twisted.

Neurodivergent people are not burning out because we are fragile, lazy, or incapable of handling “real life.” We are burning out because we are being asked to survive inside systems that were never built for our brains, our bodies, or our nervous systems.

And then we are blamed when it costs us our health.

Burnout does not come from doing too much of what you love. It comes from chronic misfit. From masking. From forcing yourself to meet expectations that ignore sensory load, executive function, trauma, and fluctuating capacity. From being praised for coping right up until you can’t.

What makes this worse is how burnout is individualised. You are told to manage your time better. To improve your mindset. To optimise your routines. None of that addresses the real issue.

The issue is not effort.
It is design.

Most workplaces, businesses, and social systems assume linear energy, emotional neutrality, and consistent output. That assumption alone excludes huge numbers of neurodivergent people. When you fail to meet it, the system does not adapt. You do. Until you can’t anymore.

Burnout is not sudden. It is cumulative. It is your nervous system screaming long before collapse happens. It is the cost of surviving instead of being supported.

And here’s the part we rarely say out loud:
Burnout is profitable for the industries that want us to fit the mould.

It keeps people compliant. It keeps them self blaming. It keeps them chasing fixes instead of demanding systemic change. It keeps the responsibility on individuals instead of institutions.

So no, burnout is not a personal failure.
It is information.
It is a signal that something is fundamentally wrong with how we are being asked to live and work.

And we should stop pretending otherwise.

Let’s burn bright, not burn out.
